As cool as a Cucumber, Callum Brown from Green Cabs NZ versus the “Boss”

I can’t comment on the one about dispatchers being sacked from other companies as I don’t have that information, but if the same thing happened here it would end in the same result.
The 5 dispatchers have extensive taxi dispatching backgrounds. not call centre. All of your other claims about our dispatch is completely false.

This is just unfortunately just more misinformation being spread about Green Cabs. We are of course pretty used to this by now and we’ll just keep on focussing on what we need to.

As far as the philosophy, we received a special mention at the Sustainable Business Network awards for what we have achieved to date with our actions.
Green Cabs was also asked to join UNEP as a result of what we have done to date. We humbly accepted. http://www.climateneutral.unep.org/cnn_members.aspx?m=322
We have also organised the planting 40000 trees around the world.
Last but not least we still try to focus on maximising the revenue of our drivers, and actually looking after them, it is a novel idea I have to admit, but it does seem to work.

your comment:
“How many people apart from management at green beetles
(nickname taken from someone else) are actually happy about this green thing, there may be some, but there a lot more that
have found the green philosphy to be somewhat lacking and nothing more than a publicity stunt/ marketing rort.”
This is an interesting comment. There are companies out there like Green Cabs are in this for the right reasons and really do want to make a difference. There are unfortunately a number of companies that try to get on board in anyway shape or form with the thinnest of arguements that their product is ‘green’. Consumers aren’t stupid they can work out what is genuine and what isn’t.
Once we show customers what Green Cabs is about and what we stand for they are pretty quick to get on board.

The “Boss” is back.

“Boss” submitted the following:

For the record “boss” is not a single entity. Boss is a group of people past, present, contractors and members
of various companies being run into the ground by green beetles. Boss is the voice of many. How many people apart from management at green beetles
(nickname taken from someone else) are actually happy about this green thing, there may be some, but there a lot more that
have found the green  philosphy to be somewhat lacking and nothing more than a publicity stunt/ marketing rort.
“GREEN CABS SAID” we have 5 dispatchers with extensive industry experience
What do you call industry experience? is it not true that your dispatchers dont have taxi backgrounds?
it industry, call centre industry, video store industry, is it also true that the only ones that do have taxi backgrounds have both been sacked
from other taxi companies for serious allegations including “feeding vehicles/contactors for personal gain.Makes for a fair playing field.
Is it not true that the highest paid employee in your call centre is the least experienced and also a family member of a managing director?

Sometimes you have to pay to get experience, Regency and Wcc phones were not being answered and their contractors were being ignored on the radio
and not even able to get thru on cellphones. Are these drivers contactors safe in the face of the dangers they face especially at night when the cant contact
their own base if they run into trouble on the road? i think not. Lack of experience/ training, regency and wcc had procedures in place regarding emergency
calls for drivers, your call centre didnt even know what a emergency call was.

“GREEN CABS SAID” if it was one of the companies we dispatch for
dispatch for, is it not true that green cabs owns regency and a stake in Wellington city cabs, sort of defeats the purpose of having a green only cab company,
am i wrong, why buy gas guzzling air polluting taxi companies when claiming to be” green”, is there something we are missing here? so infact it wasnt a company you dispatch for it was a company you owned. did share holder money pay for these taxi companies, how would a shareholder feel investing in a green idea only to find out that green cabs are investing shareholder monies to purchase the exact same companies that they are claiming to be one step above, again sort of defeats the purpose ay.

It’s the small things that make a great difference.

I’ve just started using Green Cabs as my preferred taxi company company. Last week when I was in Wellington I called to order a taxi from the city to Wellington airport.

Auckland Co-op, the other company that I’ve used a lot in the past, have an IVR system that I found a novelty at first, but after a while found it a bit impersonal. Green cabs are still a small company and I was greeted with a “Hi Mathew” (I was calling from my mobile) which was a nice touch. I hope they choose to stay with a human operator as they grow in the future.

After booking the Wellington-Christchurch trip, the operator asked one simple question that made my life a lot easier, and at the same time gave them business. They asked me if I’d like to order a taxi for when I arrived at Christchurch. And yes! I did!

And at the arrivals gate, there was a Green Cab driver waiting for me with my name on one of those pin boards.

Probably the only thing that could have been improved here was that I only had my boarding pass when I was on the call, and it didn’t have my arrival time so I had to make a bit of a guess. It would have been great if the operator could have just told me they would look at the flight arrivals time and sort that out for me.

Overall though, I’m so glad that I got asked that simple, and obvious quetion from the Green Cabs operator. I’ll be using them again

If you’re a business, what are the small but obvious things that you could be doing to improve your customer’s experience?

Taxi information in braille from today.

All taxis will have to display important passenger information in braille from today.

The Land Transport Operator Licensing Rule which came into force today means all taxis must have a braille sign with the name of the taxi company, the cab’s fleet number and the taxi company’s contact phone number for complaints.

The braille sign will be inside the front passenger door to the left of centre, under the window.

Royal NZ Foundation of the Blind’s chief executive Sandra Budd said today that many of its members relied on taxis as a means of transport.

“So it’s crucial and only fair that they have the same information as sighted people to ensure quality service and security.”

Less than 5 per cent of print information worldwide was available in formats that blind and vision-impaired people could access, Ms Budd said.

“We hope that braille in taxis is the start of a new era in making more public information accessible.”

New Zealand Transport Agency national manager for commercial road transport John Doesburg said it was important all passengers had access to information identifying the cab they were using.

The braille in taxis legislation followed the announcement last month that the Government was to begin the process of ratifying the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

Ms Budd said the convention was all about promoting equity for all disabled people.

September 21, 2008 — nztaxiblog

Callum,
Several taxi drivers have rung me to express their dismay at the extraordinarily malevolent comments you posted on the NZTaxi Blog website attacking me. Your comments and allegations are clearly aimed at me. They are false and misleading, slanderous, and offensive.

I reject your assertion that I am the ‘Boss’ who has posted comments on that blog criticising Green Cabs. That person is not me.

Your comments are the mark of a misguided man who is crumbling under the pressure. I regard these comments as beneath contempt.

However, as you have chosen to post them in the internet where they will last forever I am obliged to rebut them point by point, as set out below:

CB
Make no mistake Green Cabs is only just getting started despite what anyone says including and especially so called ‘boss’ is it?

RW
Good luck to you. I hope you grow and prosper.

CB
You come on here bagging Green Cabs, spreading false information about the company and the management team.

RW
Not true. The ‘Boss’ comments are nothing to do with me.
I have never had any involvement in the Green Cabs company or management and so have no idea what goes on behind the scenes.

It is would be clear to a blind five-year-old that the comments come from one of your disgruntled former employees.

CB
Well that makes you no different to anyone else on these blogs. You say you ordered a Green Cab and a Regency turned up. Clearly you have never ordered a Green Cab ever.

RW
Not true. I have called Green Cabs several times, both in Wellington and Auckland. I have always given my correct name to the dispatcher. Those details are recorded in your system. I have always had a Green Cab turn up.
I have always found them to be a superior service. I have told people that I approve of the: innovation of the marketing; suitability of the cars; standard of calltaking; and the calibre of the drivers.

CB
You try to bag the management team and say that it has too much corporate cabs mentality.

RW
Not true. I have never said that. Personally, I think what holds the industry back is the marked lack of professionalism at a senior management level. Corporate Cabs is a fine example of what can be developed with professional business owners at the helm. You should take a leaf out of their book.

CB
You try to spread malicious misinformation about one of the Managing Directors of Green Cabs.

RW
Not true. I have never said such things.

CB
In our view we have taken the best things from the corporate cabs model (consistency of product and service) a concept the majority of other cab companies don’t seem to get.

You would do better if you modeled Green Cabs on the Corporate Cabs systems and taken advice from people with extensive industry experience.

CB
Then you disrespect my close personal friend and one of the few people I trust 110% in this very interesting industry – Dave Jordan. Dave is Managing Director and probably the most key person in putting Green Cabs together and getting it to where it is today. He has made some great sacrifices to do so too and definitely doesn’t deserve the false and defamatory information you posted on here about him.

RW
Not true. I have not posted any comments about Dave Jordan, defamatory or otherwise. I have never met the man and have no basis for any view on his abilities.

CB
Then you try to elude (sic) to the fact that we don’t offset the emissions from our vehicles.

RW
Not me. As above

CB
When we first started Green Cabs I had had reports from drivers saying that you said that GC would never get off the ground.

RW
Not true. I was approached by a number of drivers for an opinion on your start-up proposal. I told them that you had a great marketing hook that was a fresh new image and tapped into current Government legislation around environmental issues.

I predicted that the hook would help you start with a lot of radio work. However, I though you would struggle to service the work due to insufficient cars and inexperienced dispatchers.

I also said that the deals you were offering (for both franchise holders and employee drivers) were a bad commercial model.

I stand by that view. You might not like it but we are all entitled to our opinion.

I predicted that the drivers would not make any money. Your deals are structured to generate revenue for the company owners.

I said the net result would be the franchise owners would be getting locked into a deal with a startup company, committed to paying off expensive cars, and would have no certainty of income.

I recommended to the enquirers that they hold off and see how the company developed before making a decision to join.

I stand by that view. You might not like it but we are all entitled to our opinion.

CB
Then I get reports that say you were trying to say you were involved in Green Cabs.

RW
Not true. I have never said that I was involved in Green Cabs. People see me using your cabs and leap to conclusions. I have in fact been asked that question and have vigorously denied it.

This industry is dogged by rumours, half-baked opinions, lies, slander and gossip. Being a tall poppy in this industry attracts bullshit like moths to a flame. Get used to it.

CB
I had to get your number, ring you directly to call you up on what I was hearing ensure that it didn’t continue, at which time you backed down very quickly.

RW
Not true. You did ring me some time last year when those prospective drivers walked away from your proposal, citing concerns about your flawed commercial model.

I did not ‘back down quickly’. I told you my opinion and also said everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

You then asked me to consider delivering taxi training services to your drivers. I told you I was shutting down the taxi side of my operation as I had more profitable things to do with my time.

CB
You were also involved for a number of years in WCT surprise, surprise, surprise, although from what I understand you have little to no respect over there anymore either.

RW
Not true. I enjoy considerable respect across the industry for my achievements at Wellington Combined Taxis.

I am highly regarded for my work in rescuing the company from political turmoil, infrastructural collapse and near-bankruptcy. Share values doubled as a result of my work there.

I routinely (and as recently as last week) decline invitations from influential Combined shareholders to take up the leadership role there again.

I doubt you will get the same offers after your company folds.

CB
With information I have heard about you recently and with what you have posted, pretty much all of which has been completely false.

RW
Every tall poppy attracts criticism. Every large operation contains its share of knuckleheads and malcontents. Get used to it. Don’t waste your energy gossiping with knuckleheads. You’ve got a business to rescue.

CB
In my personal opinion you have not a shred of credibility left.

So Boss (or R.W.) I hope the rest of your weekend improves (No doubt readers will be able figure out those initials as it is predominantly only people in the industry who read these blogs)

RW
I don’t give a toss about your personal opinion. It is a poorly worked out and misguided.

However, you have chosen to post these slanderous comments on a blog where they will remain forever.

Your last sentence shows that you are deliberately setting out to slander me to my peers.

Your misguided outburst reveals the true nature of the beast hiding under the thin veil of green-washing.

I can only assume that that well-known commercial pressures you are under may have caused you to start drinking heavily.

Probably better if you knock that off.

Have a nice day,

RW

Mountains of Laptops and Mobiles left in Taxis.

Research shows that almost 31,544 mobile phones have been left in New York Yellow Cabs in the last six months

CREDANT Technologies, the market leader in mobile data protection solutions, today announced survey results that indicate passengers in New York’s Yellow Taxicabs have left behind a staggering 31,544 mobile phones (that’s over 2 per taxi) and 2,752 other handheld devices such as laptops, iPods and memory sticks over the last six months.

The survey was carried out at the same time in both London and New York and highlights that New Yorkers and Londoners are both as work-obsessed as one another. Cab drivers reported that passengers spend almost half their time (44%) catching up on work, either by being on the phone or email. Unfortunately too many of these mobile devices are left behind in the back seat of the cab. The survey in New York polled 300 licensed yellow cab drivers to gauge the frequency and ease with which mobile devices are left behind and to highlight the issue that encryption is one of the preferred forms of protection to prevent unauthorized users from accessing critical data at any point.

“We’ve become too complacent about losing personal information. This is a warning to the business community and individuals to be vigilant when travelling with mobile devices especially as more people are using the latest range of “must have” mobile smartphones to store large amounts of sensitive personal and business information,” stated Michael Callahan, Chief Marketing Officer at CREDANT Technologies.

“Many of these devices now have the capacity to store as much as 10,000 Word documents, 11,000 pictures, 500,000 contact details or an amazing 1.1 million emails, making them an obvious target for identity theft criminals and hackers who can steal this information and assume the identity of the user both in their personal or business life.”

Nearly two-thirds of cab drivers reported that mobile phone owners were reunited with devices found at the back of cabs. In London the chance of getting a mobile device back was much better than NY with 80% of cab drivers handing them into their depots or personally contacting the owners themselves.

“It is clear that none of us are infallible. It’s easy to forget things when you’re travelling – it used to be an umbrella, now it’s more likely a mobile phone or and other storage device that contains highly sensitive information,” Callahan said. “It’s only when you’ve lost a mobile device containing your personal information and contacts, or your company’s data, that you really understand how disastrous it can be. Our advice is to encrypt all information on these devices to prevent access by anyone other than you.”

Not just mobiles forgotten…but a sawn-off shotgun, a couple of kids, 12 dead pheasants, 2 dogs, 1 cat, toilet seats and more… When the cabbies were asked to recall what the strangest objects were that they’d found at the back of their cabs they reported that it wasn’t uncommon for people to leave their most precious possessions, including their kids, a drunken wife left as a tip, $2,700 – which apparently made its way back to the owners, and 12 dead pheasants. Other articles left behind included firearms, prosthetic devices, and pets.

Notes:

The survey figures were based on 300 New York yellow licensed taxi drivers and extrapolated amongst 13,087 yellow licensed taxi cabs in Manhattan New York. In London the figures were based on interviews with 300 London licensed taxi drivers and then extrapolated amongst the number of licensed taxi cabs in London which is 21,729 (according to the Public Carriage Office September 2008).

Turning over a new leaf? – Callum Brown from Green Cabs NZ replies.

By the way I would like to make it clear to any readers the comments above and the initials RW do not refer to Richard Wright who has been around in and made a number of contributions to the taxi industry for a long time. I apologise to anyone who took them to be a reference to Richard.

On wearing my heart on my sleeve – I guess that is because I am passionate about effecting change in the industry.
On coming accross as being down on WCT probably a fair call, but for the record I actually admire WCT’s new direction although I do not 100% agree with the methods. They have shown that size should not be an obstacle to taking responsibility for ones impact on the environment. It should be noted that they are probably the only other company aiming to take full responsibility for all their vehicles and operations. There are smaller companies who still continue to look in the other direction.

You know; I really don’t want to go down in history as some sort of whining bastard that always finds something to moan about but maybe that’s the way that I will be remembered if I am ever remembered at all?

But the fact is that when it comes to this industry there is so much fodder.

Take this as an example.

I have been moaning for many years now about how my little taxi company has been required to provide a 24 x 7 service whilst at the same time it has been perfectly obvious that the vast majority of others have never provided that level of service.

I have written many letters complaining to the LTNZs’ local office, then the Ministers of Transport, Minister for Transport Safety and they have each passed the complaints back to the first plonkers that I wrote to.

I followed the complaints procedure as laid out in the LTNZ web site to the letter.

All of this has now gone on for years and I am still being duck shoved around. So eventually I write to the Ombudsmen.

The Ombudsmen chappies write back to me and tell me you silly bastard you might have complained to all those folk and you have clearly followed the correct complaints procedure but you have never complained to THE DIRECTOR of LTNZ so my complaint is knocked out at the first hurdle, whoop-de-do.

(The Director doesn’t even rate a mention in the laid out procedure but any clot knows the real procedure?)

So now I write to THE DIRECTOR and regurgitate my whinge.

Eventually I get to meet Mr. Director and he tells me that the matter/s will be investigated.

Arthur; you’re on a winner here I tell myself, you beauty!

In due course I get a letter from Mr. Director telling me that my complaint is pure bullshit. They have had a team working on my whinge and they have no evidence that any taxi company is falling short.

That strikes me as being a bit off because in one of my whingey letters I quote (with his express permission to be quoted) one particular taxi company managers that his company has never provided a 24 x 7 service in over 20 years of operation.

One of the senior managers of LTNZ says that he is absolutely confident that every taxi company in Wellington is compliant and he check this personally by phoning taxi companies when he goes for a pee at night. How much more thorough do you expect us to be you silly boy?

Now bugger off and stop griping.

OK now I have played the game, I’ve complained to the highest authority and not to put too fine a point on it the Director has bullshitted me.

I write to him pointing out to him the error of his ways.

He then writes a very shitty letter telling me that he now refuses to deal with a turd like me.

Thanks very much Mr. Director.

Now; having gotten a bugger off letter from the Director, I again write to the Ombudsmen and today I received a letter from them telling me that they are going to investigate my whinge.

Hip-hip-hooray.

The strangest thing about all of this is that apparently Arthur Attrill is the only person on the planet to complain about all of this.

WHAT?

Where’s the NZ Taxi Federations complaint/s?

There are none?

The NZ Taxi Federation has never complained to the LTNZ or Ombudsmen?

My lawyer tells me that the course that I have taken is a tortuous and painful process that might all result in diddley-squat because it’s just Arthur against the evil empire.

He tells me that the far more straight forward and sure way to get the proper result would be to apply to the High Court for a “declaratory judgment”.

The only problem with that is that it might cost $20,000.00 or so to get the result.

I would think that if the NZ Taxi Federation was really serious about cleaning this industry up for the benefit of its members then they should have and could easily have had a whip round to do this?

The next NZTF annual conference is in Napier in a week or so.

No doubt Annette or Harry will be there to dish out all the usual blah blah bullshit and jellybeans.

How about one person actually having the balls to tackle them on this and DEMAND a proper answer?

And tell them that if you don’t get a proper answer then this will get to the High Court.

I bet if they even get a whiff that such awkward and embarrassing questions might be put to them they will throw a sicky and hope that it doesn’t surface again until after they have lost the election.

Let’s hope Maurice Williamson will do a better job.

“HAVE A NICE DAY DRIVER”

The following poem was submitted by Anonymous.

WAKE UP IN THE MORNING
HAVEN’T GOT TIME TO PLAY
MUST GET OUT IN THE TAXI
AND TRY AND EARN SOME PAY

HAD COFFEE AND A SHOWER
THEN SIGNED IN MY I.D
WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT
THERE WAS TEN AHEAD OF ME

AS ALWAYS STARTING IN THE NORTH
WE LOOK FOR A JOB TO THE PORT
I GET A BLOODY LOCAL
YES IT’S TIME TO ABORT

OFF I GO TO WADESTOWN
AND SIT UPON THE PIT
WAITING ON THE BIG JOB
BUT AGAIN IT’S ONLY SHIT

NOW ITS GETTING LIGHTER
I DO NOT LIKE THE DARK
PASSED ANOTHER TAXI
I’M SURE I HEARD IT BARK

TRYING TO EARN SOME MONEY
TO DRESS MYSELF IN BLACK
CAN’T REALLY AFFORD IT
SNOT WILL PROBABLY ATTACK

DIDN’T HAVE A VERY GOOD START
HARDLY MADE A DOLLAR
HAD THE PLEASURE OF A SCHOOL RUN
ALL THEY DID WAS HOLLAR

NO CARS ON THE HAYWRIGHTS
THE MOTOROLA DOES SAY
6AM IN THE MORNING
NO PASSENGERS NO PAY

GOT A JOB TO THE VIVIAN
THOUGHT I’D STAY FOR A WHILE
BUT KNEW SHE HAD NO MONEY
I COULD TELL BY THE BLOODY SMILE

FINALLY GET A JOB TO THE AIRPORT
SHIT I’VE BEING DOING IT HARD
BUT WHEN I FINALLY GET THERE
HE GIVES ME A PRIORITY CARD

GOT TO THE FRONT OF THE CUE
FILLING IN MY LOG
GREETED BY A VERY SAD FACE
SORRY SIR THE AIRPORT CLOSED BY FOG

SAT THERE FOR AN HOUR
AND A POLICEMAN SAID WITH GLEE
YOU HAVEN’T GOT A NUMBER
THAT’S 500 YOU WILL PAY TO ME

THE FOG IT DID FINALLY LIFT
AND YES I GOT A JOB
HE TURNED OUT TO BE A RUNNER
AND I NEVER GOT A BOB

BY NOW I’D MISSED MY SMOKO
THOUGHT I’D JUST GET A PIE
SNOT DID BLOODY SEE ME
WAS SUSPENDED FOR AN IMPROPER TIE

NOW I HAD NO RADIO
HAD TO WORK THE STANDS
A DODGY ASKED ME WHERE TO GO
I SENT HIM DOWN TO CHAN’S

WENT TO THE OFFICE TO DOWNLOAD MY CARD
SNOT CAME UP TO ME
SAID MY EYES WERE BULGING
ALL I WANTED WAS A PEE

WENT TO THE HOSPITAL
THOUGHT IT WOULD BE NICE
GOT A JOB TO WAKEFIELD
ON A PAY IN OFFICE FIXED PRICE

BOOKED INTO THE CAMBRIDGE
HAD A VERY GOOD HUNCH
WAS ONLY THERE 5 MINUTES
AND SAW SNOT TAKING TUKU TO LUNCH

AS THE DAY DID PROGRESS
I STILL HAD LITTLE PAY
THE NEXT PASSENGER WAS PISSED
THANK YOU DRIVER – HAVE A NICE DAY

OUT OF THE TUNNEL I DROVE WITH CARE
MARE SURE TO AVOID A SMASH
50 K.P.H I THOUGHT I WAS DOING
UNTIL I SAW THE FLASH

DROVE CAREFULLY AROUND THE BASIN
NOT TO BE OUT DONE
BEHIND ME WAS A DODGY
HE SHUNTED ME UP THE BUM

OUT I GOT AND SPOKE TO HIM
CAN YOU UNDERSTAND OR NOT
HE JUST WAVED HIS HANDS AT ME
SO I SENT HIM TO SEE SNOT

I KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN
HE WILL GET A CAR TO LEASE
SNOT WILL GIVE HIM A PERMIT
AND WON’T BOTHER WITH THE POLICE

THE DAMAGE WASN’T TOO BAD
SO I CONTINUED ON MY WAY
AS I SAID BEFORE
I HAVE VERY LITTLE PAY

GOT A PICKUP TO THE CITY
LOOKED LIKE A PRIVATE COOPER
TOOK THE WOMAN TO NEWTOWN
BUGGER IT WAS THE SECRET SHOPPER

ENOUGH’S ENOUGH I SAID TO MYSELF
TIME TO BE ON MY WAY
MAY AS WELL GO HOME AS SIT OUT HERE
EVEN THOUGH I’VE GOT LITTLE PAY

WENT TO THE SERVICE STATION
TO TOP UP WITH SOME GAS
LOOKED THROUGH MY WALLET
HAD NO BLOODY CASH

ARRIVED HOME TO THE WIFE AND KIDS
AND WENT TO THE FRIDGE FOR A BEVI
SAW A LETTER FOR ME UPON THE KITCHEN TABLE
ANOTHER THREAT FROM SNOT, I HAVEN’T PAID MY LEVY

SITTING AT THE TABLE, HAVING A BEER
KNOWING FULL WELL THAT MY DEBT MOUNTS
WHO GIVES A STUFF, KNOWING
“ITS THE PUTTING RIGHT THE COUNTS.”
